One of my clients landed a job with a textbook implementation of what I teach. I almost fell out of my chair with pride at how this went down:
Someone reached out on Linkedin about a job and my client decided to be open to a conversation even though he wouldn't have previously (check!)
He went through a chat and an interview, learned about the job, and then shared that though he appreciated the opportunity, it wasn't a good fit for X reasons and what he was actually looking for was Y (check!)
They said, oh wait, that makes total sense and we can actually move things around and create that role for you (!!) and also give you the title bump that you said would make a difference to you (check!)
And that was that.
He created the perfect role for himself by knowing exactly what was important to him and what he wanted to contribute. He said he made all of those bold asks because he was pretty sure they were going to say no anyway... but then they said yes.
I often talk to potential clients about the importance of clarity and this is such a great example of why it matters. If you're showing up to conversations with your manager or in interviews with no clarity of what you want and what your strengths are, there is absolutely no way that you can effectively communicate why you should get this opportunity.
Contrast that with showing up knowing exactly what's important to you, what environment you know allows you to thrive, your strengths, your unique value, how you want to contribute, and how all of that fits in with what they're offering. THAT is how you land jobs and create epic opportunities to grow within your current role.
I could tell you 100 more stories of clients creating great opportunities for themselves but it’s something different to experience it for yourself.
